Archiutectural Conservation/Restoration

Nickerson Mansion (RHD Museum)

1881- 1883, by architect Edward Burling, the exterior sand stone walls were described, before treatment, as soot-darkened and unattractive. This is the first building in the US that was cleaned entirely using lasers. This cleaning technique allowed us to uncover the original color of the stone without damaging the surface and use of any chemicals. The exterior walls (approximately 20,000 square feet were cleaned between July 2004 and November 2005).

CSOS restored the two Bronze Clocks located on State Street Marshal Field building in Chicago, created by unknown sculptor, cast in 1887 and 1904, owned by Marshal Field Co.The bronze elements were partially disassembled in-situ; treatment was also on site.

CSOS was proud to have sculpted the recreations of lost ornamental sections on Louis Sullivan's Carson Pirie Scott Building in downtown Chicago, IL.

The entire roof section and part of the top floor section of the building had been removed and discarded during a prior renovation leaving large sections of ornament destroyed.

Several images of Sullivan designs from the period were researched to by CSOS to develop a set of scale drawings of what these missing elements might have looked like. Critiques from Sullivan experts, and architects were held until the drawings, and later the sculpted clay panels were completed. CSOS copied the finished works in plaster and honed each on into what we believe to be quite fine copies of the prairie style ornamentation use by Sullivan at the time.
Our process began by creating detailed Sullivan-esque drawings to establish the overall designs. Scale drawings where created to transfer the designs onto panels of clay, which were then sculpted into the decorative ornament. These clay panels were transformed into a more rigid plaster through a mold making process.

Restoration architects contacted CSOS after learning of our reconstruction of a Daniel Chester French sculpture which had been stolen from its base. The sculpture was one of a pair of sculptures by French. Andrzej and the talented sculptors in his studio recreated the missing sculpture, researching photographs and using the existing original French sculpture as a guiding resource.
